WordPress, How I Love Thee

wordpress
WordPress is the application I use to power most of the websites I build. In fact, unless a client requires me to use another system, I use WordPress exclusively. There are a few great applications out there, but in my opinion WordPress is the best. Here’s why:

1. WordPress is Open-Source

Open-Source means that the code is open to the community and can be tinkered with to your hearts desire. This gives WordPress a flexibility that is not open source.

2. The WordPress Community

In the years I have spent learning how to use WordPress, the community has been my best resource for answering questions and finding solutions. Because the community is so large there are tons and tons of tutorials, plugins, and resources available. From shopping carts to podcasting, I have yet to encounter a scenario that couldn’t be solved by the WordPress community.

3. Easy to Design For

Designing for WordPress is pretty straight forward. You can take an existing design and plug in certain snippets of code that make it work with WordPress. This is great because I don’t feel restricted by the CMS when designing a site for a client.

4. Easy to Update

When I first started using WordPress, upgrading was a big pain in the tail. It involved overriding files via FTP and hoping you didn’t screw things up. I love how WordPress has progressed in their ability to upgrade. As of version 2.7 the system now offers one-click upgrade for the core files and and plugins.

5. Easy to Hand-Off

Some of my clients prefer to handle adding content themselves. WordPress is great when handing off a project. I can set limited profiles that allow users to update the site without the worry that they will screw something up. There are even ways to allow users to edit the website without having to touch the back-end. It just doesn’t get any easier.

I have used many other platforms, but none can offer what WordPress does. If you need help setting up a great website, let me know. With the help of WordPress you can have a website that looks great and is a breeze to manage.

I use WordPress for just about every website I create or help create. I don’t think there has been anything easier, and it works great for CMS. Great post. Many you can write up more about how to use different features in a future post?

A client asked me about allowing his members to edit and update the content on their charity website without having to rely on one person who rarely had the time to do them. I discovered WordPress offer CMS, to overcome this problem.

As I can do web design, is it possible to upload the exisiting html files to WordPress and then set the editable area under CMS? I guess I will have to read one of the Help pages for CMS advice. Sounds like I have long way to catch up !

WordPress would be a great option for that. It isn’t quite a simple as uploading your html files. There are certain bits of php code you need to include to make it all work from the WordPress backend.

It’s not too difficult. And the good thing is once you have it set up, you’re good to go.

Let me know if you need help.
