Review: Backblaze For Online Backup

I regularly use Time Machine to backup my files to an external hard drive. This is great if my laptop hard drive fails, but what happens if there is a fire and my external drive gets burned up along with my laptop? What happens if a thief breaks in and takes everything? I would lose all my pictures of my family. All my client work would be lost! Every song I have written, every song I have purchased. It would all be gone. For some people, this might not be a big deal. But to me, that would be epic. Luckily, Backblaze is a great (affordable) option to keep my data backed up and secure online.
Probably the most popular company for online backup is Mozy. They put major bucks into advertising and affiliate programs, so they were my first choice when I decided to backup my data online. Installation was easy, setup was a breeze. But unfortunately the product failed me several times in several ways and their customer support sucked. Needless to say I didn’t stick around long. A follower on twitter recommended that I try Backblaze. The cost is virtually identical to Mozy, but I have found my experience using the product much better.
Backblaze is super easy to install and setup. You can pick and choose what files you want it to backup, or set it to backup all of your information. Backblaze automagically knows which files not to backup (such as operating system files, temporary files, etc), and will run in the background to ensure your files are always backed up.
Restoring your data is simple. Log-in online and select what files you want to be restored, and they will send you a link to download your files for free. If you have a huge amount of info, it might take a while. So they can also send you all of your info on a 400GB external hard drive for $189, or up to 4.2GB on a DVD disk for $99.

I have signed up for an affiliate account with Backblaze and will be recommending them to all my friends.
Backblaze is $5/month for unlimited backup (you can try it free). It’s a great deal and gives me the peace of mind that my data is safe and secure.

Great review, thanks!
I’ve been using Mozy on multiple computers, in past two years.
I had a few problems, with backup interruptions, but never had a major fail, and I could always count on their service, but it’s always good to know alternatives!
Greetings from Brazil
I probably could have seen past the glitches with the software. It probably was a fixable issue. My main beef with Mozy was their customer service (or lack of it). They were very unorganized. I received several emails from the same guy, and he didn’t even remember talking to me about it the first time. It seemed like he was a little overwhelmed.
I have been meaning to check this out since the first time you talked about it. Jess and I are all about our external hard drive… we’ll see.
I believe online backup is most secure and reliable way to store my data. Those who use Windows may want to try CloudBerry Backup. It is powered by Amazon S3 reliable and cost efficient storage. If you want to take part in beta sign-up on the website http://cloudberrydrive.com

I am on a Mac, so that won’t work for me. That’s one thing I like about Backblaze, they offer Mac and PC options. That way I can keep all of my family’s accounts in one company.
Yeah, I can’t imagine if I lost all my pictures! That would be a disaster! Thank goodness for these tools online!
Backblaze is a very good thing to hear but we cannot offer $5 every month. it should be a one time payment not on every month.
