There are many people that I talk with that are a little overwhelmed at the massive social universe on the web. Many would love to start digging in, but don’t know where to start. This is part one of a five post series I entitle “Get A Life (Online)”. During the course of this series you will learn how to begin to build your social presence online.
Today’s lesson will be show you how to quickly join the online conversation, and show you how to do it with style. The quickest and easiest way to join the social community on the web is to start reading blogs and commenting on those that spark your interest. And although commenting on a blog is easy as pie, there is a way that you can add some flare to your comment. Have you noticed that some comments have a personal picture next to the comment, and others have a blank picture? This is called a Gravatar.
Your Gravatar is an image that follows you from site to site appearing beside your name when you do things like comment or post on a blog. Avatars help identify your posts on blogs and web forums, so why not on any site?
It is super easy to sign up to get a Gravatar. Just visit http://en.gravatar.com, enter your email, upload a picture, and you’re done! You will now have a cool little picture of yourself that will show up whenever you comment on a blog. Go ahead, sign up; then come back here and comment and see your Gravatar in action.
Here is a great little video from the Gravatar website to get you started:
Stay tuned for the next part in the series “Get A Life (ONLINE) Part 2: Social Networks”
See how great it is to have a nice personal picture next to my comment? Try it for yourself!
Hey Vin!
This is a great theme and I look forward to following the rest of the series. Way to keep things nice and simple to make it easy to get started vs being overwhelmed with all that is social media.
Cheers,
Mitch
Thanks. I hope this will encourage more people to speak up in the comments. It is a great way to learn and join the conversation. BTW, I LOVE Freshbooks. I use it all the time!
