3 Creative Ways Churches Can Use Twitter

twitter

There’s no doubt that social media is here to stay. Many churches have started to use Twitter as a part of their ministry toolbox. I have been a big Twitter fan since I first signed up in January. It wasn’t long before I started seeing churches using Twitter in creative ways. Here are 3 great ways that I have seen churches incorporate Twitter into their ministries:

1. Questions Asked Live Via Twitter

The first time I saw Twitter used in a church setting was when my wife and I were watching some of the Mars Hill Church sermons online. At the end of his sermon, Pastor Mark Driscoll answered questions that had been submitted via Twitter during his message. The questions were real. The answers were raw. And it added an element to the conversation that wouldn’t have been achieved otherwise.

2. Confession

I saw the Confession Website of Long Hollow Baptist Church while perusing the gallery on MinistryCSS.com. Through the site, users could post confessions that were then screened, and some of them were displayed online. They tied the whole thing into their Confession Sermon Series. There are other sites that have attempted a similar thing, but none were done as beautifully as this one.

3. Real Time Interaction

Several churches have started to use Twitter for real time interaction during church. Bonnie Rochman wrote a great article for TIME about how churches are using Twitter for real-time interaction:

“…people can ask questions about the sermon that the pastors will answer later, or they can tweet in real time and hope another congregant offers insight.”

I came across a tool called Paratweet that looks great for this type of use.

Final Thoughts

The church needs to offer more than static content. That’s why I try to incorporate community building tools (like Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, Blogs, etc) into the websites I build. I am all over this idea. I think churches need to embrace technology and start thinking of creative ways to integrate it into church life.

I agree that churches need to be more innovative when presenting. Twitter is just one way. I’d also like your thoughts on other tools, social media or different platforms, that could be integrated into church services. Good stuffs.
